Thriving in Babylon: The Story of Daniel

August 6-September 3, 2017

“Meet a man forced to live in a fast changing and godless society. He faced fears about the future, concern for his safety, and the discouragement of world that seemed to be falling apart at warp speed. Sound familiar? His name was Daniel, and with the power of hope, humility, and wisdom, he not only thrived, he changed an empire while he was at it. Though he lived thousands of years ago, he has a much to teach us today.” – Larry Osborne

That’s Not My Name

August 5-6, 2017

The Israelites are in captivity in Babylon. They are living in a foreign land with foreign customs and religions. It’s no easy thing to live a godly life in the midst of an increasingly godless society. The Old Testament Daniel shows us how. But he did more than just survive; he thrived and changed the entire course of history. Although the chief official changed Daniel’s name, it did not change Daniel’s allegiance to God. We must find our identity and power in God, not in our culture and its constantly changing kings.

Daniel 1:1-7

The First Choice

August 12-13, 2017

Daniel and his three friends disciplined themselves to eat only vegetables and drink water so as not to compromise their faithfulness to God in the matter of dietary laws. God gave the faithful young men knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, enabling them to serve wisely for many years. Here’s the key: Daniel and his friends made the right choice the first choice. They decided at the very beginning to reject those parts of the Babylonian culture that threatened their identity as God’s people. God rewarded their faithfulness and commitment to His glory.

Daniel 1:8-21

God is God

August 19-20, 2017

Apparently Nebuchadnezzar had the same dream night after night until he could not sleep at all. Daniel is able to interpret the King’s dream when the King’s helpers could not. He is able to do so because God enabled him. Many people worry about the future, but as Christians we can choose not to worry because we know that God controls the future. We also know the kingdoms of this world will pass away.

Daniel 2

Faith that Withstands the Fire

August 26-27, 2017

Because of their faithfulness to God and their refusal to bow before false gods, Daniel and his friends are sentenced to death. King Nebuchadnezzar orders them thrown into a fiery furnace – only to find that they survive (with a help from God himself). It leads Nebuchadnezzar to proclaim, “They trusted in him and defied the kingʼs command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.”

Daniel 3

Sleeping in the Lion’s Den

September 2-3, 2017

Daniel practiced the spiritual discipline of prayer without regard to prevailing public opinion or political status. He courageously maintained his discipline of prayer even though doing so meant being thrown into the lion’s den. Daniel gave God full credit for delivering him from the lions, expressing confidence in God’s deliverance of faithful servants. Today, God’s people grow in their faith when they practice a disciplined spiritual life, including a consistent prayer life.
