Today we were given some time to sleep in and recover from travel, which we all needed! After breakfast we had an informal time of church under the trees, and we heard from one of the adults about Jesus and his encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. We talked about stories- learning the stories of our campers, listening to them, and thinking about how Jesus can change their story, just as he did for the Samaritan woman.
After this came more training and ice breakers, to give us a chance to get to know our fellow counselors better and be more prepared. Our campers arrived around 4 p.m., and mass chaos ensued! We cheered as they came off two buses and multiple vans, split them up into their cabins or tents, grabbed their luggage and got them settled in for the week.
We even had to pitch one more tent, because we have around 150 campers this year! This means as counselors we’re a little more stretched out, but we’re still anticipating a good week. As two boys were running down the hill towards camp, one said “this is fun!” The other said, “camp is more fun!”
We have already seen many reunions between siblings who are at different foster or group homes, and who are excited to see one another. We can also already begin to see kids that need a little more attention or who are going to be a bit of a handful.
The evening went on with dinner, games, big group time, and bed! We shall see what tomorrow holds.
Be praying for our counselors who are a bit outnumbered, our sleeping abilities, and our first full day with kids who will try hard to push our buttons and see where the boundaries are!
