In 1992, Mountainview held her first service in the gymnasium of Sand Creek Elementary in Highlands Ranch. Every Sunday, a team of people would “set up church” and then put everything away when finished. By 2002 the young church had purchased five acres on the corner of Broadway and Highlands Ranch Parkway and built their first building. In fact, it is one of the few churches with a building in Highlands Ranch that started in Highlands Ranch. In February of this year, we completed a $1.5 million remodel of its interior.
- Mountainview remains a community of ordinary people from all walks of life who trust Jesus to do what we can’t – heal, transform, renew, forgive, provide, and sustain. Through our stories, Jesus is glorified, lives are changed and our communities are impacted.
Celebrating 25 Years of Kingdom Impact
In 1992, the Highlands Ranch community was just over 10 years old and only had approximately 17,000 residents. At that same time, a young couple from Illinois relocated to this fast-growing community and started a new church that will celebrate its 25th anniversary on September 9 and 10. Mountainview Christian Church was started by Jim and Janice Phillips and held its first service in the gymnasium of Sand Creek Elementary, just off Dad Clark Drive.
One-third of all new churches close before their fourth anniversary. Not only did Mountainview survive those first four years, but by 2002 the young church had purchased five acres on the corner of Broadway and Highlands Ranch Parkway and built their first building. In fact, it is one of the few churches with a building in Highlands Ranch that started in Highlands Ranch. In February of this year, the church completed a $1.5 million remodel of its interior.
Over the last 25 years, Mountainview has helped start additional churches across the Front Range and has been very active in foreign missions — in places like Ukraine, Africa, the Middle East, Nepal, and Jamaica. “Our former pastor would remind us that we have been blessed to be a blessing,” says current senior pastor Ken Hensley. In recent years, the church has been instrumental in starting Bridge of Hope, a non-profit that helps single mothers find safe, secure housing.
Asked about the influence of Mountainview in Highlands Ranch and across South Denver, Pastor Hensley says, “Mountainview has always been a place that helps people find their way back to God. This began under the ministry of Jim Phillips and continues to this day. There are thousands of people and families who took their first step of faith at our church.”
